Heat pumps: the eight questions we answer in almost every survey
2 Apr 2026

Heat pumps are not complicated when explained properly, but they do require sound design choices around heat loss, emitters, controls, and usage habits.
On noise: modern air source heat pumps are significantly quieter than older models. A well-positioned unit is typically no louder than a fridge. The engineering considerations — distance from windows, boundary walls, and acoustic barriers — are worth discussing at survey stage.
On radiators: most UK homes can be upgraded to work well with a heat pump without replacing every radiator. The key is sizing the heat pump to deliver lower-temperature water more efficiently, not trying to force high-flow temperatures through undersized emitters.
